Hydrogenic fast-ion diagnostic using Balmer-alpha light
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hydrogenic fast-ion populations are common in toroidal magnetic fusion AQ1 devices, especially in devices with neutral beam injection. As the fast ions orbit around the device and pass through a neutral beam, some fast ions neutralize and emit Balmer-alpha light. The intensity of this emission is weak compared with the signals from the injected neutrals, the warm (halo) neutrals and the cold edge neutrals, but, for a favourable viewing geometry, the emission is Doppler shifted away from these bright interfering signals. Signals from fast ions are detected in the DIII-D tokamak. When the electron density exceeds∼7×1019 m−3, visible bremsstrahlung obscures the fast-ion signal. The intrinsic spatial resolution of the diagnostic is ∼5 cm for 40 keV amu−1 fast ions. The technique is well suited for diagnosis of fast-ion populations in devices with fast-ion energies (∼30 keV amu−1), minor radii (∼0.6 m) and plasma densities ( 1020 m−3) that are similar to those of DIII-D. A Plan for a Fast-Ion D-Alpha (FIDA) Measurement for JT-60SA∗)
A new fast-ion diagnostic based on the spectroscopy of the Doppler shifted Balmer-alpha line of Deuterium is considered for JT-60SA. Two sight lines, one tangential and the other perpendicular, are examined as candidates. It was found that the tangential one has better sensitivity than the perpendicular one. A trial of the FIDA measurement was performed on JT-60U. Signals due to the tangential-...

This experiment is an exercise in optical spectroscopy in a study of the spectra of “hydrogenic” atoms, i.e. atoms with one “optical” electron outside a closed shell of other electrons. Measurements include finding: the Balmer lines of atomic hydrogen and the fine structure of sodium lines; determination of the mass of the deuteron from the isotope shift. A high-resolution scanning monochromato...
متن کاملA Code that Simulates Fast - Ion D α and Neutral Particle Measurements
A code that models signals produced by charge-exchange reactions between fast ions and injected neutral beams in tokamak plasmas is described. With the fastion distribution function as input, the code predicts the efflux to a neutral particle analyzer (NPA) diagnostic and the photon radiance of Balmer-alpha light to a fastion Dα (FIDA) diagnostic. Reactions with both the primary injected neutra...
متن کاملSpectroscopy of Hydrogenic Atoms
The emission spectra of several hydrogenic species are investigated, after calibration from the principal lines of mercury, using a high-resolution monochromator. The Balmer lines of hydrogen are measured, as are many visible transitions of sodium, each to a relatively high degree of precision. The Rydberg constant is calculated at RH = 10970730 ± 30 m−1. The hydrogen isotope shift is measured,...
متن کاملOptical Spectroscopy of Hydrogenic Atoms
The quantum mechanical nature of an electron bound to a nucleus is well-shown by the discrete emission lines observed in spectroscopy of hydrogenic atoms. We determine the calibration of the spectroscopic apparatus used by measuring the emission lines of mercury. We then determine the value of the hydrogen Rydberg constant by measuring the Balmer emission lines of hydrogen along with the ratio ...
